How Filming started in Kerry

The Kingdom of Kerry not only has amazing talent, but also some of the world’s most beautiful scenery.
In 1910 the Kalem company, (which was founded in New York City in 1907) arrived in Kerry to make a short film tilted “The lad from old Ireland”, this was the first made film by an American production company to film outside the USA, it was cinema history.
Over the next 5 years the Kalem company produce near on 30 films all with an Irish theme and were mostly all filmed on location around Killarney. As the years went by many other big films were made in the Kingdom of Kerry .

  • The Playboy of the Western World 1962 – Location, Inch Strand, Dingle.
  • Ryan’s Daughter 1970 – Directed by David Lean. Filmed in Slea head Dingle starring Robert Mitchum and John Mills.
  • Excalibur 1981 – Film location Derrynane, starring Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson.
  • Far and Away 1992 – Filmed on location in Dunquin on the Dingle peninsula, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
  • Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince 2009 – Lemon Rock is situated near little Skelling and skellig Michael Co.Kerry for scenes .
  • Star Wars episode VII The force awakens- 2015
  • Star Wars episode VIII The last Jedi – 2017
  • The Lobster 2015 – Sneem. Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman.
  • Joyride 2021 -Tralee and other locations in Kerry . Starring Olivia Colman.
